Volunteer Notes and News

Welcome to our newest volunteer, Robin Mathieu!

This season’s “trash pack” included Debbie Schwartz, Brenda Andrusyszyn, Paul Slevin and Harper Imler.  It was a cool, beautiful morning in Oak Creek Canyon and we had a lot of fun!  Thank you for your commitment to making a difference in our environment.

The SCoC University program has been postponed until next year.

Important Reminders:

Remember we are under Stage 2 Fire Restrictions: No campfires, firearms, chainsaws, off-roading or smoking on Forest Service land (including all day use areas).  Propane grills only, no charcoal.  Fire restriction areas currently include all of Coconino County, Coconino National Forest & Prescott National Forest.  This will stay in effect until we get some moisture and less wind.  Please check white board for the most up-to-date info!

ü       3 is the magic number!  When making recommendations, please remember to choose 3 Chamber member options in any given category (when available).

ü       Never say “I don’t know”.  If you are unable to answer a visitor question tell the visitor you will find out and ask someone!

ü       Please ask for small bills from our visitors for purchases.

Heads Up:

  • Cove Parkway Rentals in Cottonwood is now renting daily, weekly and monthly apartments for visitors!  Check out their rack card for more info.
  • The Chapel of the Holy Cross was designed by sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who liked the idea of incorporating a cross at the very core of a structure; such as the Empire State Building when viewed from a certain angle.  Frank Lloyd Wright’s son, Lloyd Wright, saw the sketch and built the first model, which was to be built in Budapest.  Years later, Architects Anshen & Allen worked with Marguerite to complete different plans for what is now, the Chapel of the Holy Cross.  Additional reference info on the Chapel is available at the visitor center.
  • Always check the current events, white board and volunteer info bulletin boards when you come in to help.
  • If you haven’t picked up your 2011 Volunteer Handbook, please do so!
