Historic Preservation Commission to Honor Architect Howard Madole

The Sedona Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) will honor Sedona architect Howard Madole on Saturday, October 14th.  He will speak at the Sedona Public Library at 7:00 pm.  Howard Madole's homes are perhaps the first built in Sedona by a local architect in a specific and identifiable style.  This is a free event.

Howard Madole arrived in Sedona in the 1940s with his parents.  He designed his first house with no formal training and his family built it of adobe bricks made on the site.  Madole continued to learn about design, engineering and construction, working on projects at the Verde Valley School, along with multiple other custom homes. In the 1950s, Madole was active at Taliesin West.  While he adopted certain design elements of Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian home and other styles into his work, each project was still uniquely his own.  Madole Drive in West Sedona features five houses built by the architect that exemplify the design features most identified with his residential style, and perhaps as many as 2-3 dozen other homes in Sedona are Madole designs that still retain their original form and integrity.

Madole moved to Phoenix in 1966 and went on to design hundreds of residential and commercial buildings all over Arizona - some award-winning.  In his mid-80s, he is still a working architect.  Currently he is designing residential and commercial buildings made of expandable polystyrene. His homes in Sedona have several very recognizable themes and features, most notably, the 2x4 laminate or ‘stacked' exposed wood ceilings (the 2x4s are laid on edge) that are also part of the exposed roof structure.

The City of Sedona Historic Preservation Commission is interested in finding and documenting all the Madole designed structures in the Sedona area with the possibility of recognizing some of these homes as local historic landmarks.  On the afternoon of the 14th, the Commission will be hosting an invitation-only  reception for Mr. Madole at one of the homes he designed.  Owners of Madole homes, local design professionals and others will have an opportunity to discuss his work and contributions.

For more information on this activity or the City's Historic Preservation Commission, call Kathy Levin at 203-5035.

Sedona Questers Makes Donation to Cook Cedar Glade Cemetery

The Sedona Questers club recently made a generous donation to the Sedona Historical Society for an appropriate entry gate to the Society's Cook Cedar Glade Cemetery.   The gate was crafted by a local welder and has been installed as the new entry point to this historic cemetery.

The cemetery is the oldest within the city limits with the first burial at the site in 1918 with victims of the flu epidemic.  Many members of local pioneer families are interred at this historic cemetery, including Sedona and T.C. Schnebly and their little girl, Pearl.  The cemetery was donated to the Sedona Historical Society by the Cook family and is next to the Elks Lodge off Airport Road.

The International, Arizona and Sedona Questers organizations are non-profits that aims to encourage the preservation of historical landmarks and to stimulate the appreciation of antiques through their study.  For more information, call 282-9501.

“Local Color” makes Arizona Premiere at Second Tuesday Cinema Series Film Festival presents stunning art film with stellar cast in the heart of the arts season

If life truly imitates art, then film-lovers and art-lovers alike are in for a treat with the Arizona Premiere of “Local Color.” The Sedona International Film Festival & Workshop is proud to present the film at its Second Tuesday Cinema Series on Tuesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. in the Harkins Sedona Six Theatres.

“Local Color” boasts an impressive stellar cast featuring Academy Award nominee Armin Mueller-Stahl, Ray Liotta, Charles Durning, Ron Perlman and newcomer Trevor Morgan. In George Gallo's wise and warm coming-of-age tale set in the summer of 1974, a young artist seeks inspiration from an experienced painter and liberation from his father's worn-out ideas. Quiet, dreamy John (Morgan) would rather visit museums or paint than play baseball or chase girls, and this worries his rough-hewn, homophobic father John Sr. (Liotta).

When a local art aficionado (Durning) turns John on to the impressionist paintings of reclusive Russian immigrant Nicoli Seroff (Mueller-Stahl), who just happens to live nearby, John impulsively decides to find Seroff in the hope that the Russian master will take him on as a student. Time has not been kind to Seroff, who has turned his back not only on art, but life.

As the summer progresses, both men discover new ways to see the world and all its colors. Together, they give one another a priceless gift. John learns to see the world through the master's eyes; and the master learns to see life once again through the eyes of innocence.

Gallo's wife and the producer of the film, Julie Gallo, will be present at the Sedona screening to introduce the film and lead a post-film discussion and Q&A.

The film will be shown on two screens simultaneously at Harkins. Tickets for the Oct. 10 Cinema Series presentation are $10, or $8 for members of Film Sedona. Tickets will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Harkins Sedona Six Theatres lobby. Cash or checks only, please. Seats are limited, so arrive early.
